Back in 2013, I decided to visit my brother who was living in Canada.
I was living in New Zealand at the time and after a cold winter in windy Wellington, I was craving sunshine and warmth. Perfect timing for a three-day stopover and reunion in the sunny LA hotspot of Venice Beach, before hitting British Columbia.
My brother and I checked out the boardwalk, chatted with street artists and watched skater boys effortlessly flaunt their skills at Venice Skate Park.
We watched a Doors tribute band while drinking beer, lost a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses, stumbled across an English pub and discovered a speakeasy style bar.
We took photos at Muscle Beach, rifled through clothes at a vintage store and ate tacos at James’ Beach (from the 2009 movie I Love You Man with Paul Rudd and Jason Segel).
LA has a bad reputation, but I liked it. We ventured into other touristy spots like Rodeo Drive, Hollywood Boulevard and Santa Monica Pier, but Venice Beach had charm. Crazy, eccentric charm, but charm nonetheless.
Here are a few favourite images from that trip – the first time I travelled with my brother and the first time I visited the USA.
