Imagine you have a free day in Perth and the sun is shining.
You will probably want to head outside to soak up some rays. But choosing where to go can be tricky and time-consuming.
To help you on your way, here are some fabulous outdoor spaces in Perth to relax, take a walk or get some exercise.
Kings Park and Botanic Garden
One of the world’s largest inner-city parks, Kings Park is beautiful and offers innovative activities.
It is rich in Aboriginal and European history and has a worldwide reputation for scientific research, conservation and education.
This is a great place to bring children with playgrounds and immersive learning experiences on offer. For the adults, take the scenic route and discover more than 3,000 species of native flora in the Western Australian Botanic Garden.

Swan River
If dolphin-spotting is on your bucket list, Swan River is just the place as it’s home to a pod of resident dolphins.
Running from the Darling Scarp to Fremantle, this stunning vista is a popular attraction for boaters, fishers and picnickers. You can also take a dip in the river, as the water is clean and safe to swim in.
This culturally rich river was named Derbal Yerrigan by the local Aboriginals who believe the river was created by a rainbow serpent ‘Wagul’ – the creator of creeks, waterholes, lakes and valleys on its journey to the ocean.
Cottesloe Beach
Soft white sand and turquoise waters await you at this heavenly beach.
It’s a 20-minute drive from the city centre but Perth’s favourite rental car company can sort you an affordable car hire deal.
The waves are gentle at this beach and lifeguards are regularly on duty, making it a popular snorkelling spot.
It’s also the perfect place for a stroll as towering Norfolk pines frame Cottesloe’s grassed terraces. But it’s recommended to visit in the morning before the winds pick up.

Perth Beaches Cycle Trails
Perth has wonderful cycle trails for those that want to take in the coastal scenery and get some exercise.
There are two main coastal cycle routes to choose from.
The first is the Indian Ocean Explorer. This takes you through the historic West End of Fremantle, the working port, across the Swan River into North Fremantle and onto a scenic coastal cycle path that cruises by Port, Leighton and Cottesloe.
The other route is the Sunset Coast Ride, which officially begins in the suburb of Marmion and is an easy, 14 km trail that explores the area’s wildlife and history.
Penguin Island
South of Perth, this island is accessible by a five-minute ferry ride and is home to the world’s smallest penguins.
You can get up close and personal with these adorable penguins during their scheduled feeding times with the rangers. Plus, like many of Perth’s beaches, the island is blessed with white sands and aquamarine waters.
